However, he was forced to settle for an interim bout with fellow top contender Michael Moraes.\n\nIt has led to an awkward situation atop the 170lb division, stranding the other highly-ranked challenger Ian Machado Garry altogether. Prates is not happy at all, and voiced his concerns in an interview overnight.\n\n**READ MORE:** Carlos Prates views fresh matchup he won’t take unless it’s for a belt as harder than Michael Morales\n\n## Islam Makhachev slammed by Carlos Prates in epic rant\n\nSpeaking with Laerte Viana, Carlos Prates did not hold back in giving his opinion on Islam Makhachev’s decision not to defend his belt in January. Since winning the title in November of 2025, the Russian has defended it just once and will now make fans wait until at least April.\n\n“So the guy comes out saying he wants to be an active champion, and he wants to fight,” Prates said in a lengthy rant where he noted that the UFC brass were also upset with his decision. “Hunter [Campbell, UFC boss] even said that the date had been reserved for him.\n\n“Then he just came out and said he didn’t want it… He chickened out. The situation I have now is to beat Morales and get the interim belt. Then I’m going to come back and beat Makhachev twice as badly as I was going to before, just so he learns his lesson and stops being such a coward.\n\n“Right when the time finally came for me to achieve my dream of becoming champion, the guy pulls something like this. I was really p—ed off but that’s just how it is. Morales is going to be the one who pays the price now.”\n\n## Carlos Prates claims Islam Makhachev has angered UFC brass with title snub\n\nIt’s not just Prates who is upset with Makhachev following his decision. He says that the date was reserved for a name of the Russian’s stature, and that UFC officials were not pleased to have to replace him.\n\n“The UFC was p—ed,” he continued, before suggesting that his rival should have pretended to be hurt. “They didn’t like it. If you don’t have a serious injury and you’re not hurt, then fight man. Your contract is for this. This is your job. If you don’t want to fight, vacate your belt and that’s it.\n\n“Instead, you act like an a——. That’s some a—— s—, you know. You’re unsure whether you’re going to fight in January or not? Then don’t go around talking about it, man. Just stay quiet, fake an injury or something.
